Supporting Recovery: Our Services and Community Impact
Updated: Aug 26
In today's fast-paced world, the journey to recovery can often feel overwhelming. Whether it's recovering from addiction, mental health challenges, or physical injuries, the path to healing is rarely straightforward. At 2 Steps Away, we understand the complexities of recovery and are committed to providing comprehensive support services that not only aid individuals but also strengthen our community as a whole.

Understanding Recovery
Recovery is a deeply personal journey that varies from person to person. It involves not just overcoming challenges but also rebuilding one's life. This process can include:
Physical Healing: Addressing health issues through medical support referrals and rehabilitation.
Emotional Support: Providing counseling and therapy referrals to help individuals cope with their feelings and experiences.
Community Engagement: Encouraging social connections that foster a sense of belonging and support.
At 2 Steps Away, we recognize that recovery is not just about the individual; it’s about providing referrals to a supportive environment that encourages growth and healing.
Our Services
At 2 Steps Away, Inc., we believe that asking for help should lead to more than a phone number or a list of resources, it should lead to a meaningful next step.
We provide compassionate community resource navigation, warm referrals, and continued follow-up for individuals facing homelessness, substance use challenges, behavioral health needs, and barriers associated with reentry. Our role is to help people identify their needs, understand available options, connect with appropriate community providers, and stay engaged as they move toward greater stability and independence.
Homeless Services
Experiencing homelessness can make even basic needs difficult to address. We help individuals identify and connect with resources that may include:
Housing and Shelter Navigation: Connections to emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent housing resources, and other homelessness-response programs.
Benefits and Medi-Cal Navigation: Assistance identifying programs and organizations that can help individuals access healthcare coverage, public benefits, and supportive services.
Transportation Resources: Connections to transportation assistance that can help individuals reach appointments, programs, employment opportunities, and essential services.
Identification Assistance: Navigation to resources that help individuals obtain or replace identification and other important documents.
Continued Follow-Up: Whenever possible, we follow up after a referral to determine whether the individual successfully connected with the resource or continues to face barriers.
Our goal is not simply to make a referral. We work to help individuals move from an identified need toward an actual connection.
Recovery Support
Recovery looks different for every person. 2 Steps Away helps individuals experiencing substance use challenges identify recovery resources and appropriate levels of support within their communities. Navigation may include connections to:
Substance use treatment providers
Detoxification and residential treatment resources
Outpatient recovery programs
Behavioral health providers
Peer and recovery-support resources
Community-based recovery organizations
Benefits and healthcare resources
Other supportive services that contribute to long-term stability
2 Steps Away does not replace licensed treatment providers. Instead, we help individuals understand available options and connect with qualified organizations capable of providing the clinical or treatment services they need.
Community Engagement
Strong communities are built through relationships, participation, and access to opportunity. Our community-engagement efforts focus on connecting individuals with resources and supportive networks while strengthening relationships between community members, nonprofit organizations, service providers, and other partners. Our work may include:
Community Outreach: Meeting people where they are and helping them identify available resources.
Resource Connection: Connecting individuals with organizations that address their specific circumstances.
Community Partnerships: Collaborating with nonprofits, service providers, public agencies, healthcare organizations, and other community stakeholders.
Volunteer Engagement: Creating opportunities for individuals to participate in efforts that strengthen their communities.
Education and Awareness: Sharing information that helps communities better understand homelessness, recovery, behavioral health, reentry, and available resources.
Community engagement helps ensure that individuals are not expected to navigate complicated systems alone.
Justice Engagement
Returning to the community after incarceration or involvement with the justice system can present significant barriers to housing, employment, healthcare, identification, benefits, and recovery.
2 Steps Away helps justice-involved individuals identify resources that can support successful community reintegration. Navigation may include connections to:
Employment and workforce-development resources
Housing and homelessness services
Identification assistance
Medi-Cal and public-benefit resources
Substance use treatment and recovery support
Behavioral health services
Transportation resources
Reentry and community-based support programs
We approach reentry with dignity and respect, recognizing that a person's past should not prevent them from accessing opportunities to rebuild their life.
How Our Navigation Process Works
A referral is only valuable when it moves someone closer to the help they need.
Our approach emphasizes a closed-loop navigation process:
1. Need IdentifiedWe begin by understanding the individual's immediate needs, barriers, and priorities.
2. Navigation AssessmentWe identify appropriate community resources and determine which options may best address the person's circumstances.
3. Warm ReferralWhenever possible, we help connect the individual directly with the appropriate organization rather than simply providing contact information.
4. Follow-UpWe follow up to determine whether the connection was successful and identify additional barriers when appropriate.
5. Outcome and ConnectionThe objective is a meaningful connection to services, resources, or opportunities not simply a completed referral.
Community Impact
Our work extends beyond individual referrals. Every successful connection has the potential to improve stability for an individual while strengthening the larger community.
Closing the Gap Between Need and Services
Orange and Los Angeles Counties contain extensive networks of housing, healthcare, recovery, employment, benefits, behavioral health, and reentry resources. Yet finding the right program, understanding eligibility requirements, completing the next step, and remaining connected can be difficult—particularly for someone experiencing a crisis. 2 Steps Away helps bridge that gap.
Supporting Recovery and Stability
Recovery and stability are influenced by more than one issue. Housing, behavioral health, substance use, employment, transportation, healthcare, identification, benefits, and community connection can all affect a person's ability to move forward.
Our whole-person navigation approach considers these interconnected barriers and helps individuals identify resources appropriate to their needs.
Reducing Stigma
We believe every individual deserves to be treated with dignity.
Through community outreach, education, lived-experience leadership, and collaboration, 2 Steps Away works to challenge stigma surrounding homelessness, substance use, behavioral health challenges, and justice involvement.
We focus on the person—not the label.
Strengthening Community Partnerships
No single organization can address every need. Our model depends on collaboration with treatment providers, housing organizations, healthcare systems, nonprofits, public agencies, employers, community organizations, and other service partners.
By strengthening these relationships, we can help create clearer pathways between individuals who need assistance and organizations equipped to provide it.
What Success Looks Like
For 2 Steps Away, success is not measured simply by the number of referrals made.
Success means helping a person move closer to a meaningful outcome.
That may mean:
Connecting with a housing or shelter resource
Entering an appropriate substance use treatment program
Connecting with behavioral health services
Obtaining identification
Accessing Medi-Cal or other benefits
Connecting with employment or workforce resources
Receiving transportation assistance
Engaging with reentry services
Successfully completing a warm handoff to a community provider
Remaining connected to support after the initial referral
As our services grow, 2 Steps Away is committed to tracking navigation activity, referral outcomes, barriers to service access, successful connections, and follow-up whenever appropriate.
Our goal is simple: A referral should lead somewhere.
